Beginning with the Music of the Ainur, The Silmarillion tells a tale of the Elder Days, when Elves and Men became estranged by the Dark Lord Morgoth's lust for the Silmarils, pure and powerful magic jewels. Even the love between a human warrior and the daughter of the Elven king cannot defeat Morgoth, but the War of Wrath finally brings down the Dark Lord.
I wasn't sure that I would appreciate the style here, as it's so different from the Hobbit and LOTR, but it was oddly addictive, and finally reading the whole story since the beginning of the world feels incredible.
While this book features the finest world building in all of fiction and perhaps even all of English literature, its obsession with detail makes it a difficult read. It is not something I should have attempted reading at age 13 (did not finish at about 35%), but restarting it was one of the finest decisions I've ever made.
