A great and concise book on the modern challenges of Japan

I was looking for a concise books giving keys on the challenges of modern Japan, it is exactly what Japan from Jeff Kingston is doing. Through different themes such as the disputed territories, corruption or inequalities, the author dress a very precise maps of important topics for Japan, giving a precise yet documented view of the history of the last 50 years. The books gives thorough references on Japan and ends with recommendations of books to read to read deeper on a topic. Definitely a recommended reading

Après l’assassinat de l’ancien premier ministre Shinzo Abe, j’avais besoin de rafraichir mes connaissances sur l’histoire, l’économie, la politique du Japon contemporain. C’est en suivant les articles de Jake Adelstein que je suis tombé sur la recommandation pour le livre Contemporary Japan du même auteur.
Cependant, je cherchais quelque chose de plus concis, de concentré sur l’après-Seconde Guerre mondiale.
« Japan » est, dans cette optique, absolument parfait. 160 pages. Des chapitres courts et bien équilibrés.
Des sujets trop souvent négligés y sont brillamment traités :
Politique américaine vis-à-vis du Japon
L’impact de la guerre froide
Relations avec les pays voisins
« La réconciliation » après guerre. Le contraste est absolument saisissant entre les voisins du Sud-Est et ceux du Nord-Ouest.

La reconstruction
la « décennie perdue »

C’est l’aspect le plus développé.
De quoi découvrir qui était Shinzo Abe, ce qu’il a fait. Ce qu'il voulait faire.
L’aspect le moins traité me semble lié à la population japonaise. Cela manque un peu de sociologie…
Même si là encore, un sujet absent des médias est bien analysé : la contestation.
La pression de la société est forte, mais certains luttent et se révoltent.
On ne le sait pas même au Japon.
