The Lightning Thief is a 2005 American-fantasy-adventure novel based on Greek mythology, the first young adult novel written by Rick Riordan in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. It won the Adult Library Services Association Best Books for Young Adults, among other awards. It was adapted into a film named Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief released in the United States on February 12, 2010. On May 14, 2020, Riordan announced that a live-action TV series for Disney+ would adapt the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series, with the first season covering The Lightning Thief. The novel is followed by The Sea of Monsters and spawned two sequel series (The Heroes of Olympus and The Trials of Apollo) and the extended universe of the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles.

An Enjoyable Adventure with Greek Mythology

Twelve-year-old Perseus "Percy" Jackson knew he was different from other kids. For most of his life, he had struggled in school. His ADHD and dyslexia made it impossible for him to learn anything. One day, his boarding school decided to take a tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This was meant to be an ordinary field trip filled with boring droning over history but an incident with a fellow student draws the attention of a teacher named Mrs. Dodds. The woman changes and charges after Percy only to have him defeated.

Percy knows that something is going on and his concerns are addressed when he hears Grover and Mr. Brunner discussing him. Even more, he sees three old ladies knitting while on his way home. This middle grade book would have been one of my absolute favorites in my youth, and I loved it now too. I love Greek mythology, and this is basically Greek mythology meets modern urban fantasy.

Perseus Jackson, short Percy, is a problem student who can never settle down anywhere. His mother lives with his detestable step-father in New York, and he gets moved from boarding school to boarding school. But one day something changes, when his math teacher turns into a Fury and tries to attack him. He eventually finds out that he is actually a demi-god, the offspring of Poseidon with his mortal mother, and that there's a whole camp full of children like him.

But war is brewing amongst the three major gods Zeus, Poseidon and Hades because Zeus' bolt was stolen, and Percy is sent on a quest with Grover the Satyr, and Athena's daughter Annabeth, to …
