Hard Sci-fi, Dystopia, Space, High Fantasy and Speculative Fiction are my drugs.

I like to make lists and write stuff on my blog.

Neal Stephenson: Termination Shock (2021) 3 étoiles

Termination Shock takes readers on a thrilling, chilling visit to our not-too-distant future – a …

Finally getting back into reading and making some progress on this book. I have nothing but good things to say about it so far. Stephenson, as usual, has written a book that pleases the sci-fi nerd in me through excellent character development and pacing.

Kim Stanley Robinson: The Ministry for the Future (Paperback, 2021, Orbit) 4 étoiles

Established in 2025, the purpose of the new organization was simple: To advocate for the …

Man. Speculative fiction that reads like the morning news. Everything you can think of is in this book. Every buzzword used in the past 5 years and some things that have only recently come up. This book is taking me far too long to read but I need to take time to digest some of the points and how much they reflect on what is happening in the world.

The author did their research and then some: the book covers political, social, economic, technological, and [insert adjective] theories. From blockchain to rewilding. It is all there.

Although I haven't finished, I think this book should be required reading for students in multiple fields. The same way that Snow Crash (Stephenson) was required reading at Microsoft, this should be in the hands of...everyone before they head off to university or decide on their careers.

Hugh Howey: Wool Omnibus (EBook, 2012, Broad Reach Publishing) 5 étoiles

This Omnibus Edition collects the five Wool books into a single volume. It is for …

Loved this book and the series as a whole. So glad it will become a series hughhowey.com/the-wool-tv-show/

When I read this book I was just getting back into reading, or rather discovering reading outside of school for the first time.

Looking forward to seeing this come to life.

Andy Weir: Project Hail Mary (Hardcover, 2021, Ballantine Books) 4 étoiles

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission--and if he fails, humanity …

Pure entertainment

I think this will be the book I recommend the most this year. It is entertaining from beginning to end. If you like sci-fi or space stories, read it. If you don't, read it anyway because you will laugh. It is very rare that I tear through a book in the span of a day, but, and I apologise for the cliché, I could not put this book down.

Cal Newport: Digital Minimalism (Hardcover, 2019, Portfolio) 3 étoiles

Digital minimalists are all around us. They're the calm, happy people who can hold long …

Common Sense and Anecdotes

3 étoiles

If I had finished this back when I started (2019) I would have lived it. Now, in 2021, a lot of what Newport talks about seems like common sense. Beyond the advice, the anecdotes of the digital minimalists that he encountered while preparing this book are à propos and well-chosen to highlight the underlying call to action: quit faffing around on your phone, stop with the constant Facebooking, put your phone down and do something else that keeps your hands busy or puts you in a social situation.

N. K. Jemisin: The City We Became (EBook, 2020, Hachette Book Group and Blackstone Publishing, Orbit) 4 étoiles

In Manhattan, a young grad student gets off the train and realizes he doesn't remember …

Review of 'The City We Became' on 'Unknown'

If I only knew how to write a fitting review.

The timing of this book's publication is as perfect as the story itself. This is a beautiful book despite dealing with a prime selection of the most horrible things life can throw at us: hatred, racism, sexism, homophobia, intersectionality, gentrification and even a very little dash of MRM.

Now, we just need to wait for the rest of the trilogy.
