Boost with CW for police violence: here is an impressive short interview with a protester at the University of Chicago encampment https://social.coop/@raph/112407007515735951
LB: so we have "cello scrotum" & "guitar nipple".
How about Violin Chin, Viola Areola, and Bass Ass to complete the strings at least?

Over-identifying with inanimate objects
I'm in a cafe sitting by the window next to the door. Someone just arrived, leaned their expensive-looking bike up against the window, and then knocked it over by opening the door. It's now in the way of the opening door so everyone else who comes in disturbs the bike further, but the owner has shown no interest in moving it or picking it up. I am mystified, and I wince for the poor bike every time someone comes in.
Macklemore
Am I the only person who remembers that time he performed in a Fagin costume and then tried to wave the backlash away with a shitty apology that dodged the issue? https://www.thestranger.com/news/2014/05/18/19580769/why-didnt-anyone-notice-macklemores-anti-semitic-costume-at-emp
I don't even think he's an antisemite, just dangerously clueless. But I don't see any sign that he learned anything from the episode, and I'd rather cheer on solidarity from people I don't have to ask the "do they hate me or are they just that ignorant?" question about.
I guess what this really shows up is how few big stars have put out more than an Instagram statement, so we're all depressingly hungry for whatever scraps we can get.

In #Israel, thousands of protesters are marching on the Ayalon highway and police are making arrests. They want their govt. to accept the deal with Hamas.

venting about campus protest politics
having a moment of gritting my teeth at the "outside agitator" narrative for campus protests when, at least locally, so much of the food/supplies/support/meat shield/etc. is coming from people in the community who don't have current affiliations, including lots of us who were former students/staff/faculty. we're being punished for having connections that permeate between those designations, and for our material displays of solidarity. it's disincentivizing students from having connections outside of campus, when on the flip side the universities are painted like some walled off compound with no investment in the social environment around them.
whenever there's a big contradiction like this one (college students are simultaneously privileged outsiders who aren't invested in the community, or punished for building strong connections with the community), that's when i start looking at where that narrative is coming from, and who benefits from the existence of that contradiction.
I am developing a new appreciation for what @eldang deals with on a day-to-day basis and also the depth of his knowledge about how to wrest useful information from an ArcGIS instance set up by people who would prefer that you didn't have their data.
Since October 7th, I've joined protests, fundraising events for Gaza, and students on university campuses.
As a Jew and someone who has a ton of friends and family in Israel, I want to share some thoughts on claims of antisemitism in student encampments and the broader Palestinian solidarity movement:
SFFBookClub May: David Mogo Godhunter
The #SFFBookClub May pick is David Moyo: Godhunter. Which I've just learned isn't stocked by my local library and will take 3 weeks to special-order at the bookstore. I wish the rest of you better luck
[also, I typoed the title in the poll itself. The correct version is David MoGo, not MoYo]
New joint statement by members of #UCLA’s history department, compiled from testimony of faculty present at encampment during various periods and in response to last night’s police violence against students. We make 6 explicit calls of the university administration. Read at link below.

Biden fucked up.
1) He responded to peaceful protests in a way that greenlit further violent crack downs from University admins and cops— the ones who've been the real instigators of any "chaos."
And 2) his response was ahistorical, to boot, omitting the rich history of disruption as a core component of student-led protest. I mean, what do you think SNCC were doing sitting down at those Woolworth's counters, if not disrupting the status quo? Why do you think campus Vietnam war protests were so successful at capturing the nation's attention? Why do think Kent State happened?
