Good book for young teenagers

I already read it in french when my daughter read it at 9-10 years old. I find it's a really good approach to teen literature (the author also wrote the awesome Hunger Games, i think that's why).
We find the same codes : a penny-less and sad teen hero who found a bigger than him destiny, in a universe close to child books (giant speaking animals), with epic battles, death flirting and a little bit of romance...
Female characters are interesting (like in Hunger Games), and all the characters are not black and white.
I highly recommend from 9 (for mature readers) to 12 years old.
